3.1 The student should write an assignment in which they explain the nature and role of improvements in health and safety practice within the organization and how they can impact on the business.
Nature of Health and Safety Improvements
Findings from Health and Safety Audits, New Health and Safety Standards, Revised Legislations, Health and Safety Best Practices and the Successful Completion of an NVQ Level 6 Qualification in Health and Safety offers opportunities for health and safety improvement within the organization. An improvement which is sought by senior management to permeate the Planning, Implementing, Reviewing and Acting upon the health and safety management system for continual improvement. As has been cited in (International Labour Office, 2011)“Experience shows that OSHMS is a logical and useful tool for the promotion of continual improvement of OSH performance at the organization’s level”.
Role of Improvements in the Organization
Improvements in Health and Safety practice fuels worker involvement in the health and safety decision making process, health safety meetings and reporting of near misses and incidents. Health and Safety Systems and related procedures are well communicated and implemented to ensure a safe working environment. Changes that come with the systems and procedures are embraced by every member of the organization. It is good to mention that a more positive health and safety culture becomes evident as the organization is poised to offer competitive and quality services to all its clients. All these are achieved because a sense of ownership is created amongst workers. Workers play an important role as interested parties in shaping the health and safety culture the organization. Top Managers engage employees, encourage an open door policy and discuss issues and provide feedback as appropriate.
Impact on Business Performance
The organization experiences a decline in incident rates, medical cases and is able to identify and comply with its health and safety legal obligations in a responsive manner. The organization is also able to identify shortfalls which are eliminated or reviewed. For Example, 3 Senior Strategic Partners of Sterling Safety Services are currently undergoing an NVQ Level 6 Health and Safety Practice Qualification. Even though none has been issued a certificate yet, the entire team have remarkable lessons which has caused improvements in health and safety practices within the organization. Policies and Procedures have been reviewed as a result. One of such is a discrimination and anti-harassment Policy reviewed to become a Diversity and Inclusion Policy where other important concepts and practices have been captured. (362 Words)
